: Geospatial Information Technologies are increasingly being managed as major components of larger IT strategies. To achieve higher operational efficiencies, utility organizations must continue to control the cost of Information Technology (IT) and determine where to invest in IT and Geographic Information System (GIS) to support core business objectives.  Aligning your IT/GIS strategy with the business needs of your organization will:

•  Identify how your IT/GIS organization can provide greater value to the business.

•  Align IT/GIS with business strategy to determine how to gain greater value out of your technology.

•  Understand the new IT/GIS capabilities you need to enable emerging service delivery opportunities.

•  Set a strategic direction that links your business challenges with leading-edge thinking on technology issues.

•  Develop the right IT/GIS strategy to better support your business needs.

Achieving alignment between business and IT/GIS strategies has long been a rather challenging endeavor for most organizations.  There was much interest in strategic alignment in the early 1990s as IT and GIS technologies became seen as an integral part of the enterprise.  IT/GIS had moved from being an operational function to being a strategic tool that could enable the business functions of the organization. Recently, the Society of Information Management noted that the number one concern among executives was the alignment of business and IT.  Despite this interest, they found that over 40% of executives of Fortune 500 companies in the US indicated that their business and IT strategies were not aligned.

Overall, alignment of business strategy and IT/GIS strategy has remained and important organizational challenge that has plagued management for many years, and has long been recognized as a key issue for managers as IT/GIS has become strategically significant.  The factors presented above suggest where organizations should focus their attention in order to successfully achieve alignment between their IT/GIS and business strategies.
