Report from September 2016 NGAC Meeting

Posted By Talbot J. Brooks, Monday, October 3, 2016

The National Geospatial Advisory Committee met 27/28 September at the National Conservation Training Center in Shepherdstown, WV. Several enlightening lightning talks were provided by committee members. These, along with other public meeting materials may be found under the “Meetings” heading at the NGAC web page. Especially noteworthy were some new looks at recent data, particularly the publication of the Arctic elevation dataset as derived from Digital Globe imagery by the Polar Geospatial Center as a series of story maps by Esri. A new way of visualizing Census and related data, called DataUSA, is also worth a look. Other newsworthy items included the efforts underway by the Association of American Geographers to develop an Advanced Placement examination for geospatial technologies.

The NGAC continues work on three papers centered on sub-committee activities. These include a position paper on the revision of FGDC standards practices, future trends in geospatial technologies, and the future direction of geospatial policy. These papers will be released by year’s end and will also be posted to the NGAC web page. A tremendous amount of discussion was focused on the understanding and continued growth and education about the National Spatial Data Infrastructure, the need for revising OMB A16, and FGDC engagement opportunities. GITA members are encouraged to share their opinions on these topics with Talbot Brooks.

The NGAC will convene again by teleconference in December.

NGAC Update

Posted By Robert Austin, Tuesday, August 19, 2014

The FGDC held a series of NSDI Leaders Forum meetings in 2013 as a part of the development of the 2014-2016 NSDI Strategic Plan.  The NSDI strategic plan was adopted by the FGDC Steering Committee and endorsed by the National Geospatial Advisory Committee in December 2013.  The Leaders Forum meetings were helpful in developing a shared national vision for the NSDI.  A follow-up NSDI Leaders Forum was convened via webinar on July 30, 2014 to discuss strategies for the continued engagement of the non-federal geospatial community in the development of the NSDI.  The work of the NGAC on the NSDI was presented to the Leaders.

In other news, the NGAC sub-committees have been preparing their 2014 reports for review by the NGAC as a whole during the September 23-24 meetings in Shepherdstown, WV.  The Address Sub-committee has been active in assembling case studies that document the value of a consolidated national address database.  The Privacy and Workforce Sub-committee have also been active since the last NGAC meeting and will be presenting the results of their work in September.

Stay tuned for more news as work progresses!
