Important Association News

Dear Geospatial Community,

The GITA Board of Directors met in The Woodlands, Texas, on September 19th. As a result of that meeting, I am exceptionally pleased to announce the following opportunities for member participation and improvements to GITA's membership programs:
  • As required by Association bylaws, a minimum of three Board members will be rotating off the Board at the end of this year.  Board participation is a great way to support the greater geospatial community while advancing your career to the "next level". In addition, GITA Board members are often asked to serve as community experts on decision making bodies of national importance such as NGAC and GISCI. My appeal to the membership for Board nominations can be found on the GITA website, click here.  Nominations close November 4th.
  • The GITA Awards Program has been completely revamped and is once again accepting nominations.  This is a great way to honor GITA corporate and individual members who have been champions of the geospatial community. Program details, award example pictures, and nomination forms are now available on the GITA website. Learn more.
  • In the year ending September 30, 2016, GITA North America and its chapters distributed over $30,000 in educational funding to deserving students and organizations.  As a way to increase awareness about GITA's scholarship programs, expanded information and links to application forms have been added to the Association website.  Use the "Scholarship Programs" icon on the home page to learn more. Please consider passing along this information to students or institutions who you believe may not be aware of these programs.
  • Effective October 1, 2016, the Board voted to commence a series of improvements to Association membership programs. Immediate changes include providing a Welcome Aboard packet of information and "goodies" to each new member and sending a membership certificate (suitable for framing or personal records) to each renewing member.  Additionally, as a way to reduce billing difficulties for members, auto renewal has now been made a registration option.  Look for additional improvements to follow in the months ahead.
  • Finally, the Association is always in need of individuals who are willing to contribute - even in a small way. To facilitate making that possible, a volunteer form is now available on the GITA website which lets the individual member shape the extent and type of contribution they are able to offer.  A happy volunteer working in an area of personal expertise is the goal of this effort.  Go here to review the form.  We would love to have your assistance, in any way you are able to provide it!
All for now.  Thank you for your time.

Mark E. Limbruner, GISP
President, GITA
