GITA’s GEOXchange List Service

A list service is a wonderful communication tool that offers GITA members the opportunity to post suggestions or questions to a large number of people at the same time. When you submit a question or something that you want to share to the list service, your submission is distributed to all of the other people on that list.

Please note that commercial messages are not permitted, nor are attachments. If you want to send someone an attached file or have a product or service that you believe would help them, please send them a private e-mail message.

If you would prefer to read all mail relating to a question in one sitting, you can request that a digest of all the messages be sent to you weekly, rather then as they occur. If you send the DIGEST-07 command to the list, you will no longer receive individual messages and instead receive them once per week. Use the Digest command by sending a blank e-mail to:

The list service recognizes the following commands in the subject field of messages sent to the GEOXchange mailing list at geoxchange@gita.org

SUBSCRIBE	subscribe to the list
UNSUBSCRIBE	unsubscribe from the list
DIGEST	get detailed help for DIGEST commands
DIGEST-07	set digest period to 07 days and turn on digest mode
DIGEST-OFF	turn off digest mode
DIGEST-ON	resume digest mode using last selected period

Caution – Do not use any other command. If the subject of your message is anything other than one of the above commands, your message is forwarded to everyone who has subscribed to the mailing list.

A few notes:

1.  When responding to GEOXchange, keep your messages brief.
2.  Stick to the topics intended for discussion on GEOXchange.
3.  Avoid sending messages with limited content, such as "I agree!"
4.  Identify yourself.
5. If you have a conflict with an individual, settle it through private e-mail messages.
6.  Don't be critical of people's queries posted to GEOXchange. Many people are new to the concept of a list service. Send them a private message and "gently" make suggestions if you think it is warranted. We're here to grow, share, and learn from each other.
7.   Do not send HTML formatted messages.
8.  Do not ask your e-mail program to confirm receipt or reading of messages sent to the GEOXchange address.
9.  Do not use automatic e-mail reply programs while you are absent and subscribed to the list - unsubscribe for the period you are gone.
