GITA Members Invited to Assist Department of Labor in Updating Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) Codes

Sign Me Up!

The Geospatial Information & Technology Association (GITA) is continuing to work with the U.S. Department of Labor to update the Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) codes for Geospatial Information Scientists and Technologists, Geospatial Information Systems Technicians, Remote Sensing Scientists and Technologists, and Remote Sensing Technicians on the Occupational Information Network (O*NET). We would like to invite our members to participate in a survey that will help accurately describe the occupation and recognize your expertise in this field. The occupational data provided by DOL’s O*NET is used to aid employers, human resource professionals, job counselors, and labor market analysts in demonstrating the importance of professional roles in business today.

Participation in this effort is voluntary, and will make a positive impact on the data collected by the U.S. Department of Labor. Your confidential responses will help shape the way the Geospatial Information Scientist and Technologist, Geospatial Information Systems Technician, Remote Sensing Scientist and Technologist, and Remote Sensing Technician occupations are described to millions of job seekers, educators, and business leaders. A short description of the occupational data currently being updated is listed below. Please use the descriptions, not the title, to decide if you may be a good match.

O*NET-SOC Code:  Geospatial Information Scientists and Technologists , 17-1029.01: Research and develop geospatial technologies. May produce databases, perform applications programming or coordinate projects. May specialize in areas such as agriculture, mining, health care, retail trade, urban planning or military intelligence

O*NET-SOC Code:  Geospatial Information Systems Technicians , 17-3039.01: Assist scientists, technologists, and related professionals in building, maintaining, modifying, and using geographic information systems (GIS) databases. May also perform some custom application development and provide user support.

O*NET-SOC Code:  Remote Sensing Scientists and Technologists , 19-2099.01: Apply remote sensing principles and methods to analyze data and solve problems in areas such as natural resource management, urban planning, and homeland security. May develop new analytical techniques and sensor systems or develop new applications for existing systems.

O*NET-SOC Code:  Remote Sensing Technicians , 19-4099.04: Apply remote sensing technologies to assist scientists in areas such as natural resources, urban planning, and homeland security. May prepare flight plans and sensor configurations for flight trips.

You are eligible to participate in the survey if the occupation currently being updated is your primary focus and you meet the following requirements:

·    You have at least one year’s experience as a Geospatial Information Scientist and Technologist, Geospatial Information Systems Technician, Remote Sensing Scientist and Technologist, and Remote Sensing Technician (according to the descriptions).

·    You have five or more years experience either teaching/training, supervising/managing people as a Geospatial Information Scientist and Technologist, Geospatial Information Systems Technician, Remote Sensing Scientist and Technologist, and Remote Sensing Technician or performing the occupation (according to the description).

·    You are currently active in the occupation or performing the occupation.

·    You would like a fitting opportunity to represent your occupation on a national basis.

GITA encourages all members from the Geospatial Information Scientist and Technologist, Geospatial Information Systems Technician, Remote Sensing Scientist and Technologist, and Remote Sensing Technician occupation descriptions to participate in order to assist in the collection of information about these occupations . As it is our policy to protect our members’ privacy, we are encouraging your participation on an opt-in basis.

If you would like to participate in the survey, please click on the appropriate Occupation Class below to generate an email to a represntative at the partnering Research Triangle Institute . Please include your title, last name, first name, address, city, state, ZIP code, daytime phone number, and length of experience as a Geospatial Information Scientist and Technologist, Geospatial Information Systems Technician, Remote Sensing Scientist and Technologist, and Remote Sensing Technician, and in what area.

A representative from the North Carolina-based Research Triangle Institute, a nonprofit research firm assisting USDOL with the O*NET data collection effort, will contact eligible participants to complete the survey. Responses will be strictly confidential, and your contact information will not be shared with anyone else. Your responses will be combined with others to describe the tasks, skills, knowledge, abilities, and activities of Geospatial Information Scientists and Technologists, Geospatial Information Systems Technicians, Remote Sensing Scientists and Technologists, and Remote Sensing Technicians. More information about this data collection effort is available at www.onetcenter.org .

Your participation in this important research project will contribute to a key resource that will provide our nation with continuously updated occupational information. On behalf of GITA, I thank you in advance for your time and effort.

Sincerely,

Robert M. Samborski
