Narrative
: The United States National Grid (USNG) is the point positioning standard for many emergency and disaster-based application areas. This coordinate system, analogous to MGRS, may also be used as an area management system. When used in this capacity, grid squares resemble the pixels found in raster data. Vector data may be normalized to USNG-based grid squares (pixels), converted to raster, and used as layers in a model which may be evaluated using “raster math”. This session will provide instruction on reading USNG-based coordinates, demonstrate how to add USNG to maps using Esri products, and demonstrate the use of USNG polygons for risk modeling.

Bio: Talbot Brooks is a 31-year veteran of the fire service, the Director of the Center for Interdisciplinary Geospatial Information Technologies at Delta State University, an instructor at the US National Fire Academy, a member of the National Geospatial Advisory Committee, a Past-President of GITA, and chair of the USGIF Certification Governance Board. He, along with fellow GITA Past-Presidents Dr. Robert Austin and Dave DiSera, recently published a book on the application of geospatial technologies to crisis and emergency response titled “GIS for Critical Infrastructure Protection”.
