Narrative: This session will describe in general terms how spatial data gets on the internet. The session describes current workflows and technologies including back end data storage, map and data services and the building blocks used in applications that rely on geospatial information.  This includes a review of server technologies, programming languages, client interfaces, and open-source data and software. Moreover, this presentation shows how these various technologies and approaches fit together to create web-based services, data, and other resources.

 

Bio: Dr. Karen Payne is the Head of Humanitarian Programs at the Carl Vinson Institute of Government, Information Technology Outreach Services (ITOS) at the University of Georgia.  Under funding from the US Agency for International Development she provides geospatial IT services to the wider humanitarian community preparing for and responding to disasters worldwide. In this role, she oversees the full publishing life cycle of information products and services used in disaster management including the development and deployment of global geospatial data, specialized applications, infrastructure and services.  She has completed or ongoing projects in conjunction with the WFP and former UNJLC, UNOCHA, UNHCR and UNSPIDER.
