Narrative: The geospatial industry has extensively discussed and explored an expansion or first-time implementation of a GIS system from the standpoint of best practices, needs analysis, and the technical aspects of the program. Not as well recognized is the necessity of understanding and navigating the political landscape within the organization in which the program is being utilized. This area has a tremendous effect upon the ultimate success of the program, sometimes even overriding the technical aspects of a system implementation. This presentation will examine some of the pitfalls in this area, and recommend ways to mitigate the obstacles that may not have been previously considered.

Bio: Mr. Hodge is the Executive Director of Geographic Information System Certification Institute (GISCI), starting this position in May 2013. Prior to this, he was engaged in GIS work for over a decade, with extensive experience in the Federal, Regional, and local government sectors.
