Narrative: Do we live in a golden age of web mapping? What makes an age “golden” anyway and why do we care? These questions and more will be explored. Along the way we will see how the history of the Roman Empire can inform our modern-day geospatial aspirations. We will view life not from the eyes of a Roman emperor/CEO, but through the eyes of a citizen/regular user. Roman citizens navigated treacherous political currents, seeking to thrive amidst struggles for imperial succession. As geospatial professionals, we navigate equally deep waters as we make key technology choices. Which software platforms should we invest in? Which tools should we use? Which mapping standards are the most important: ESRI REST, WMS or something else? Which languages: Javascript, Flex or Silverlight? The webinar will outline key strategies for success in this, the golden age of web mapping.
