Goals and Results for 2007
Rocky Mountain Chapter Scholarship Program
The Rocky Mountain Chapter of GITA
has a history of commitment to student education.
Over the past eight years, more than $40,000 has been given
in scholarship awards to students from 15 different
Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, and New Mexico colleges and
universities. The goals of the Rocky Mountain Chapter
scholarship program are to support national GITA education
goals, provide financial support to GIS programs in
the chapter’s four state region, and to create
networking opportunities for students entering the
GIS field.
Some of the research projects that the scholarships have helped to fund include:
rangeland ecology and watershed management; the utilization of digital image processing, spatial statistics, and GIS techniques to study small-scale sea ice dynamics during winter in the Bering Sea; spatio-temporal trends of a reintroduced black-tailed prairie dog colony in a desert grassland; and inputting data collected by a county sheriff’s department in GIS to perform spatial and temporal analysis in order to detect accident hotspots.
“Thank you for making this award available to an innovative GIS project as it promotes the use and flexibility of this technology.”
-Jason Northcott, New Mexico State University
