Calling all GISPs! Earn Contribution Points toward GISP recertification by becoming a GeoMentor

Posted By Becky Shumate, Wednesday, October 15, 2014

Earn Contribution Points toward GISP Certification by becoming a GeoMentor.  GISCI has teamed with Esri to strengthen the ConnectED Initiative by recruiting Certified GIS Professionals (GISPs) to serve as GeoMentors, who will work with local schools to help them set up and learn to use their ArcGIS Online accounts.

For more information on the joined efforts of GISCI and Esri, please visit http://www.gisci.org/News/NewsDetail/tabid/171/ArticleId/14/GISCI-Teams-with-Esri-to-Strengthen-ConnectED-Initiative.aspx

To sign up to become a GeoMentor, please visit http://www.arcgis.com/home/item.html?id=92089b124cfc485796d430789cf37cac and follow the instructions to add yourself to the map as a "GeoMentor".  It is highly recommended that you login to your ArcGIS online account before adding your "dot" to the map as it will protect your personal details as well as restrict any editing to your entry to you and no one else.

Esri and GISCI will help with educator and GISP pairing if necessary, but we strongly encourage anyone volunteering to be a GeoMentor to look at the story map and identify any schools or educators in your area and reach out to them yourself using the contact info that they have provided.  Although there is some oversight, this is more of a grassroots movement that we hope can be successful with educators and Geomentor volunteers working to pair.  If specialized needs are required and no GISP in that area of expertise has volunteered, GISCI and Esri may be able to assist in the pairing.  If this is the case, please send your request to Bill Hodge, Executive Director of GISCI, at bhodge@gisci.org stating the requirements, needs, or specialized experience so GISCI can help facilitate a pairing.

Stay tuned...more to come from GISCI.

GISCI 2014 Map Contest Entry Deadline Extended

Posted By Becky Shumate, Monday, April 7, 2014

GISCI 2014 Map Contest Entry Deadline Extended

GISCI has been busy this spring coordinating the 2014 Map Contest. This year the data associated with the contest is not only challenging to work with for the cartographer striving to reach the golden ring, but is also of interest to the US Department of Transportation, Federal Highway Administration. GISCI has structured the 2014 map contest around the U.S. National Bridge Inventory data and hopes that the resulting maps can help communities and government agencies alike isolate and identify area bridges that may be in need of care. GISCI encourages collaboration between GISPs, government, and private industry to solve problems to the benefit of all. Perhaps the resulting maps from the use of the U.S. National Bridge Inventory data will function as a public service for both communities and government.

For those of you that choose to accept the challenge and strive for that golden ring, the entry date has been extended to April 15, 2014. Please see the GISCI website for specific map contest entry information.
