Update on Pipeline Week & Hurricane Harvey

Posted By Mark E. Limbruner, Monday, September 25, 2017

Due to the damage Houston sustained as a result of Hurricane Harvey, and further damage done to the southeast from Hurricane Irma, GITA has decided to postpone this year’s scholarship golf tournament.

Over the past several years, this event has brought together vendors and attendees of Pipeline Week, and raised significant funds for the GITA Scholarship Fund in a fun and widely supported event.  However, with damage sustained locally and regionally, the GITA Board of Directors thought it best to forego this year’s tournament.  The golf outing may be rescheduled for next spring to be hosted by the GITA Texas Chapter.

GITA and our Pipeline Week partners at PODS and PennWell suggest the geospatial community to help support victims of Harvey in a number of ways including;

  • Service Project:  Pipeline Week attendees will be invited to assemble lunch packs on the evening of Tuesday, Oct. 3 from 5:30 – 7:30.  Our commitment is to assemble up to 1,000 lunch packs during this time.  PennWell will graciously be donating the food and supplies for the lunch packs.  This effort is to support Kids Meals Houston, please learn more about their very worthwhile efforts here:   www.kidsmealshouston.org
  • Direct donations:  The Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund, hosted by the Greater Houston Community Foundation.  You may learn more and donate here: https://ghcf.org/hurricane-relief/
  • Scholarship donations:  Additionally GITA is also accepting direct donations to the Scholarship Fund; we would hope that you would also consider supporting this ongoing educational effort.  You may learn more and donate here: GITA Scholarship Fund

The board of GITA would like to express that our thoughts and prayers are with Houston during the cleanup and recovery from Hurricane Harvey.   Many members of GITA and our partners in the Pipeline Week Conference are located in the Houston Area and suffered significant damage.

However, we are pleased to see that Houston is recovering and we are looking forward to seeing our colleagues and friends at Pipeline Week 2017!

Paying it Forward - Year End 2016 Update!

Posted By Mark E. Limbruner, Wednesday, December 21, 2016

Greetings, Happy Holidays to our members, affiliates and the geospatial community.

I wanted to drop a note to thank you for your support during my service as GITA president for the 2015-2016 term.  As of the New Year Matt Thomas, GISP will take the helm of our organization.  I have no doubt Matt will do a wonderful job, and that I am passing the leadership of the association to a set of most capable hands!

During the holiday season, we are reminded of those things we are most thankful for.  One of the achievements I am most grateful for is the resurgence of the GITA scholarship programs.  This past year GITA and its local chapters has given over $34,000 in scholarship funds or stipends to deserving geography, GIS, and geospatial students!

The revitalization of GITA’s scholarship programs is one of the achievements I am most proud of, as it marks the sign of a revitalized association.

If you find it in your heart, and would like to help us “pay it forward” to the next generation of geospatial professionals please consider a donation to the GITA scholarship fund.  Donations are completely segregated from our operating budget and are solely devoted to assisting deserving students.  Merely click on the following link to be directed to the GITA Scholarship Fund.  Scholarship Donations  Giving to deserving students is a most impactful way to help shape the future of our industry!

The directors and staff also are taking great pride in the relaunched GITA Awards Program Awards and recognition are now available for both individual and corporate contributors to the geospatial industry.  You can learn more about the GITA awards program here:  GITA Awards!  Do you know of an individual or organization deserving of recognition?  If so, feel free to place a nomination!

With that I will close my update, many thanks again to my fellow directors, and a personal shout out to our administrator, Steve Swazee of SharedGeo whose help and dedication to this association is unmatched!

Best wishes for a Merry Christmas, and a most prosperous 2017!

Regards,

Mark

GITA Summer 2016 Update!

Posted By Mark E. Limbruner, Monday, July 11, 2016

Busy, Busy, Busy…..

Greetings to my fellow GITA members and geospatial colleagues.  I wanted to touch base with you and fill you in on happenings with organization for the past several months.

First off we have had an extremely busy first half of 2016.  The association has supported or been the main organizer of 5 different events so far this year:

  • GITA Pacific Northwest Annual Conference – April 2016
  • EnerGIS 2016 – May 2016
  • UMGEOCON (Upper Mid-West Geocon) – May 2016
  • Common Ground Alliance 811 Conference & Expo – March 2016
  • GeoBuiz 2016 – April 2016

This is an incredible effort on the part of GITA staff, volunteers and conference organizers.  Our members, affiliates and sponsors can rest assured that GITA is back, very vibrant, and bringing our members and the geospatial community top quality educational and networking opportunities.

Next up is our annual GITA Oil & Gas Conference / Pipeline Week to be held in The Woodlands just north of Houston September 20-22.  The GITA & PODs organizing committee have put together an awesome, or as some aspiring presidents would say “A HUGE”, lineup of speakers and papers for this three day event.

Tickets and sponsorships are now available, please visit the conference web site at: Pipeline Week.

Early bird admission is still available.  Save yourself or your employer a few bucks, register early!

Additionally this April I traveled “Down Under” to Melbourne to meet with our GITA Australia-New Zealand colleagues.  I was offered the opportunity to present at the Locate16 Conference co-hosted by our GITA-ANZ sister organization.  I updated the attendees on the happenings of GITA North America, gave a brief update on the latest innovations in geospatial technology; UAVs in particular.  I also presented a brief paper on detecting and mapping rogue greenhouse gas emissions from oil and gas operations.  Photos of the Locate16 conference may be viewed here: Locate16 Gallery.

I’d like to thank my colleagues on the GITA Australia-New Zealand board of directors for their hospitality.  I’ve now had the pleasure of traveling to and meeting with their board twice, I can see the same level of dedication in our Australian colleagues as can be seen in our North American staff.  Thank you again, GITA-ANZ!

On an administrative note, our board has engaged a membership retention consultant Shari Pash.  Ms Pash has been working for the past few months to review the association’s structure, and processes.  The goal is provide a more efficient, interactive and streamlined experience while enrolling or re-enrolling members and affiliates.  Updates from the board will be provided in the next few months announcing the roll out of our new enrollment procedures.

With that, I’ll sign off for the summer.  The GITA board and I wish you a relaxing summer, safe travels to those headed to the beaches or mountains, and hoping we see you in The Woodlands for Pipeline Week this September!

Thank You to GITA Japan!

Posted By Mark E. Limbruner, Thursday, November 12, 2015

Many thanks to my colleagues of GITA Japan who hosted me in Tokyo for their 26th annual conference on November 5th and 6th.  It was great to renew acquaintances, meet new friends and share updates on the success we have had with the North American chapter during 2015.

The conference was well attended, and well supported by both vendors and sponsors.

The board of directors and I wish GITA Japan much success in 2016!

Regards - Mark L.

Moving Day!

Posted By Mark E. Limbruner, Sunday, June 28, 2015

Welcome to the GITA President's Blog, sorry I haven't written lately folks!

I wanted to drop the membership a brief note that our transition in moving from an Aurora, Colorado based organization to a Minnesota based organization has finally been completed.

Over the past year the GITA archives, corporate office and conference supplies were transferred painstakingly, trip by trip from Colorado to the new GITA Archive and Fulfillment Center located near St. Paul, Minnesota.

I had the opportunity to personally oversee the final organization and consolidation of corporate records, along with assisting in organizing the supplies that can be used by GITA North America, and our local chapters to support conferences and provide GITA branded merchandise for distribution to members and attendees.

Look for the GITA Fulfillment Center to soon open, to provide you with your needed supplies, and GITA branded merchandise.

I want to personally, thank Steve Swazee and Phil Berg of SharedGeo for overseeing the transfer and personally accompanying the GITA materials as it made the trek from Aurora to St. Paul.

Though our back office functions, archive, and fulfillment center have relocated, we remain a Colorado chartered organization.

If you have any questions or concerns over the relocation, please feel free to drop me a note at: president@gita.org, or reach us at toll free number: 844-GIS-GITA I'll be more than happy to talk to you!

Regards and enjoy your summer! - Mark E. Limbruner, President GITA NA

Updates

Posted By Talbot J. Brooks, Tuesday, August 19, 2014
Greetings Colleagues!

There's much ado here at GITA.  As you may have noticed, our new website is up and running.  Within these ethereal walls you will find many new membership benefits.  Please take a moment to view the short video about how to use this site - you can find it at the top of the Member Benefits section of "Join Now" on the menu at left.

We're really ramping up our efforts to bring you first rate educational content.  Today's webinar about un-manned aircraft systems had more than 100 participants and was a great first joint endeavor between GITA and ASPRS.  We're looking to continue knocking down silo walls amongst the various professional geospatial organizations in an effort to bring you more first rate content and collaborative efforts.  After all, GIS is a team sport...

Please take note of the following upcoming events listed under the "Calendar" section of the site found at the lower-right of the home page.  Highlights include:

15 September: EnerGIS 2014 in Pittsburg will focus on the use of spatial technologies in the energy industry.  Visit the Learning Center and search using "EnerGIS" to see some of last's year's presentations.

16 September: Seismic Hazards for Water Systems is the 1pm CDT webinar by East Bay Municipal Utilities District

29 September: Making $ense of Integration at SDU Harbour Centre will be GITA Pacific Northwest's annual meeting

28--30 October is Pipeline Week, GITA's annual Oil and Gas Pipeline conference in Houston (http://www.pipelineweek.com/index.html)

As we continue to grow, we're looking for volunteers to help organize webinars, help us with managing social media, contribute content to the Learning Center, and organize and re-energize our chapters, and to serve on the Awards Committee.  Please drop me a note at president@gita.org if you're willing and able to pitch in!
